YMCA of Austin, East Communities Branch

Westminster Care Nursing Home
Volunteers from UnitedHealthcare and AARP came together to improve the community spaces within the Westminster Care Nursing Home in Orlando. In just a matter of hours, volunteers recreated a butterfly garden area to provide a sanctuary for residents, completed general landscaping around the facility, built benches for additional outdoor seating, and cleaned up the facility's intergenerational playground. When all the projects were completed, volunteers converged in the community room and got together with the facility's residents for an interactive arts and crafts project. This event supports UnitedHealthcare's dedication to helping older adults live healthier lives no matter where they live.

How do you change a community? Build a playground, Los Angeles

Resurrection School
That’s exactly what we did in a community in East Los Angeles. Partnering with KaBOOM!, a non-profit organization, volunteers from the area, and a group of volunteers from UnitedHealth, we built the first playground at Resurrection School in 60 years, with the hope it could lift a whole community. Efforts such as these cultivate leadership, create pride, and give our children a place to grow healthy and strong. On June 10, cast members from “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’s” wolf pack Alex Meraz, Tinsel Korey and Julia Jones assisted volunteers in preparing the build site. On June 12, the playground’s completion was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony. In addition to local elected officials, we were joined by the stars of Nickelodeon’s “True Jackson” Ashley Argota and “Victorious” Daniella Monet and Leon Thomas III as our guests. Our Fun and Fit Fest provided free health screens and education, games and activities like Zumba dancing and Wii, as well as complimentary healthy snacks. A very healthy day indeed!

When you build a playground, a community comes together, Atlanta

Venetian Hills Elementary School
With the help of KaBOOM! community volunteers, elected officials and UnitedHealth Group volunteers, we all built something much bigger than a playground at Venetian Hills Elementary School. People from all over came together to enhance an entire community. Taking pride in the place where our children play speaks volumes about the character of the residents who live there. Projects like these cultivate leadership, spread goodwill and create a place where children can grow up happy and healthy. Grammy® Award-winning rapper and actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges lent a hand to the build and also attended the ribbon cutting ceremony. There was even a health fair and the UnitedHealthcare Connected Care mobile clinic demonstrated its capabilities. It was a great day all of our volunteers could be proud of.

Using our feet to beat cancer, New York

EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women
Imagine thousands and thousands of people all pounding the pavement with one goal in mind – eradicating women’s cancers. This monumental effort would not have been possible without volunteers like you. Whether it was handing out water or working at a first aid station, volunteers came from everywhere to help out this great cause. UnitedHealthcare was proud to play many roles at this event, including an educational one. Long-term sustainable volunteering is our goal, and it’s events like this that make it all worthwhile.

Volunteers Waltz into Food Bank to Volunteer, Las Vegas

Three Square Food Bank
More than 50 volunteers from UnitedHealthcare, along with ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba, donated their time for a day of service at the Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas as part of a larger volunteer effort during AARP's national convention. The volunteers sorted and packaged food for distribution to needy residents of Southern Nevada. Three Square is the only food bank in Las Vegas and it prepares more than 8 million meals annually for underprivileged families. UnitedHealthcare is dedicated to the health and well-being of its community and members, including its senior members, which is why UnitedHealthcare is a major sponsor of the AARP’s national event in Las Vegas.
