Rigamajig Grant and Service Project

Detroit Prep
As part of our ongoing effort to Build Healthier Communities and decrease obesity, "Do Good. Live Well." teamed up with KaBOOM! to give a Rigamajig to Detroit Prep. A Rigamajig is a new large-scale building kit used for hands-on free play and playful STE(A)M learning. More than 250 students at Detroit Prep will get to use the Rigamajig each year! On Friday, Oct. 4 volunteers helped paint, work on some additions to the school’s playground and other service projects. The volunteer project concluded with the unveiling of the new Rigamajig, when the kids had their first opportunity to play with it!

Our 10th Playground with the New England Patriots

As part of our ongoing effort to Build Healthier Communities and decrease obesity and increase physical activity, "Do Good. Live Well." teamed up with the New England Patriots and KaBOOM! for our 10th consecutive playground build together and the 31st playground we’ve built with KaBOOM! since 2010! More than 200 volunteers from UnitedHealthcare and the community built an engaging and safe play space that will help enhance their student’s health and well-being. More than 2,000 children will have the opportunity to use this new playground annually!

Supporting Mobile School Pantries in Utah

As part of our Empowering Health commitment, UnitedHealthcare provided a grant to the Utah Food Banks to fund fresh produce distributions to students and their families at six of 29 schools served in the Salt Lake City area. This grant will help to expand access to fresh and healthy food to students in need at Douglas T Orchard Elementary, Lake Ridge Elementary, Magna Elementary, Pleasant Green Elementary, West Valley Elementary and Whittier Elementary during the 2019-20 school year. We will celebrate this grant with three opportunities for volunteers to help distribute food to students at Douglas T. Orchard Elementary on Monday, Sept. 9; Lake Ridge Elementary on Wednesday, Sept. 18; and, Magna Elementary on Thursday, Sept. 26.

Visiting Richmond on Stop #5 of the Team8 Tour

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond - Petersburg Club
The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and UnitedHealthcare’s “Do Good. Live Well.” employee volunteer initiative continued the fourth annual Team8 Tour with a stop at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond – Petersburg Club on Sept. 25. The stop supported the club in its effort to be a safe haven for local children and a resource for the community. UnitedHealthcare volunteers revitalized the club’s park and athletic fields, landscaped, and worked alongside youth club members to create a mural in the unused tennis courts.

Teaching Gardens Farmer’s Market

Wilson High School
UnitedHealthcare’s “Do Good. Live Well.” employee volunteer initiative is partnering with the American Heart Association in Los Angeles on their Teaching Gardens: Farmer’s Market program. The program has two goals: empower youth to develop business literacy while taking pride in their hard work and increase healthy food accessibility in communities that are known food deserts. Students will research fruits and vegetables that are culturally competent to their community and will plant the appropriate seedlings, tailoring their Farmer’s Market to the community needs, therefore in-creasing access to fresh fruits and veggies most needed by their neighborhood.

Supporting Fresh Food Distributions in Duluth, MN

Duluth, MN
On Sept. 19, Volunteers from UnitedHealthcare will celebrate a grant to support 200 fresh produce distributions in the Northern Lakes area. Volunteers will distribute fresh produce in Cloquet, MN in the morning as well as sort and pack food at Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank in Duluth in the afternoon. The Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in the Northland where they rescue and redistribute over 5.8 million pounds of nutritious food, enough food for 4.7 million meals, to approximately 44,000 people in need annually.

Supporting Youth Soccer with the NE Revolution!

UnitedHealthcare’s “Do Good. Live Well.” employee volunteer initiative is proud to partner with the New England Revolution and the Boston Center for Youth and Families (BCYF) to support youth soccer in Boston! We hosted a youth soccer clinic alongside New England Revolution trainers  and players on Monday, Sept. 16 from 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in Boston, MA. This free clinic gave Boston youth access to fitness right in their own neighborhood.

The Team8 Tour Continues in Los Angeles

Gardena High School, Los Angeles County
The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and UnitedHealthcare’s “Do Good. Live Well.” employee volunteer initiative continued the fourth annual Team8 Tour with a two-day stop at Gardena High School in Los Angeles County, September 11-12. The stop helped support the school in its effort to be a safe haven for its students. UnitedHealthcare volunteers built out a new weight room and fitness space, made improvements to the special needs classroom, assisted in landscaping projects around the school grounds, and hosted a fitness clinic with nationally renowned trainer Chris Welsh.

Supporting Youth in Memphis

As part of UnitedHealthcare’s Empowering Health commitment in Tennessee, we gave a charitable grant to the YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South to launch its Y on the Fly program - a mobile unit designed to deliver critical programs and services to economically disadvantaged youth. To celebrate our partnership, our employee volunteers are invited to a special Y on the Fly event where they will help staff the Y on the Fly unit at Millington Elementary School to benefit hundreds of students.
