Packing Hygiene Kits with the Vikings

Packing Hygiene Kits with the Vikings

On Friday, Aug. 5, 2016 volunteers from UnitedHealthcare teamed up with kids from a local Second Harvest Heartland summer food service program to pack hygiene kits and watch the Vikings practice at the team’s 2016 training camp.

Many families not only struggle to have enough nutritious food, but they also often have difficulty affording basic non-food personal care and household products. Food shelves try to help with shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste and other items, but are sometimes unable to offer them due to cost.

To kick off the project, former Viking Chuck Foreman, who was a running back on the team from 1973-1979, greeted about 20 boys and girls with insightful messages about being a good neighbor and teammate. Then, the kids and volunteers packed over 1,500 hygiene packs consisting hygiene products including soap, toothpaste and deodorant. These hygiene packs were later distributed through Second Harvest Heartland’s network of agency partner programs to families in the Mankato area. To top off the afternoon, the kids enjoyed watching and cheering as the Vikings players ran through drills on the playing field next to the tent where our volunteer project was taking place.
